On Thursday, Kenyans received a cautionary alert to prepare for extremely cold nights and scorching hot days over the next five days.

As per the meteorological service’s forecast, nighttime temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as 7°C, while daytime temperatures are anticipated to soar to a sweltering 37°C. Regions affected by these temperature extremes include Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka.

In his weekly weather advisory, Kenya Met Director General David Gikungu revealed that nighttime temperatures in the aforementioned areas could fluctuate between 7°C and 9°C. Meanwhile, counties such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana, and Samburu are forecasted to experience scorching daytime temperatures of up to 37°C.

Additionally, the Southeastern lowland regions encompassing Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties are expected to endure daytime temperatures reaching up to 34°C. Other counties, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu, will also face similar temperature readings.

Along the coastal areas, namely Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, daytime heat is projected to peak at 33°C, with sunny conditions persisting throughout the week.

The Kenya Met highlighted the likelihood of intermittent cold and cloudy conditions in certain parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern lowlands, and the Rift Valley. Moreover, strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are expected over some coastal, northeastern, and northwestern regions.

This alert comes shortly after the weather department’s prediction of continued rainfall over select areas in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley. However, most parts of the country are anticipated to remain generally dry, according to the meteorological department’s latest report.
