Bungoma County, June 10 – A police officer on duty was tragically killed on Sunday evening after being run over by a colleague at the Cheptais Junction along the Chwele-Sirisia road. According to a police report, the officer was conducting a routine inspection when the incident occurred.

The deceased officer had stopped a vehicle for inspection when another officer, driving a police Landcruiser from the opposite direction, sped towards the scene. “As the deceased was addressing the driver, he was knocked down by a Toyota Landcruiser, registration No. GKB **9T, from Sirisia police station driven by another officer,” the report stated.

The impact left the officer with severe injuries, and he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. His body was transferred to a local health facility awaiting autopsy. Police have not disclosed whether the driver of the Landcruiser was apprehended.

The report also mentioned that “due to the impact, the deceased suffered serious head injuries and died on the spot. The police vehicle also scratched a stationary trailer on its right rear.” Both the private vehicle and the police Landcruiser were towed to Chwele Police Station for inspection, and the scene was processed as investigations commenced. The Bugoma Central Base Commander is overseeing the case.

This incident follows a series of similar tragic events involving police officers. A few months ago, another officer was run over by a speeding motorist in Kieni, Nyeri County, and in January, another officer was nearly run over by a motorist who ignored orders to stop.

Investigations are ongoing as the police seek to understand the full circumstances surrounding the latest incident.
