The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has reported a significant increase in the number of students applying to private universities, with 18,557 students seeking places this year. This is nearly double last year’s 9,622 applicants, marking a substantial rise in demand for private higher education.

Despite the surge in applications, private universities, which collectively declared a capacity of 57,322, achieved only a 32 percent placement rate according to the latest KUCCPS data.

Under the higher education funding model introduced last year, students have the option to study at either public or private universities. However, those opting for private institutions are not eligible for government scholarships but can apply for student loans.

Mount Kenya University emerged as the top choice, receiving 3,226 students out of its declared capacity of 6,103. Other private universities attracting high numbers of students include KCA University (2,074), Zetech University (1,703), Kabarak University (1,653), and the Catholic University of East Africa (1,218).

Some universities, however, saw minimal interest. The International Leadership University, with a capacity of 300, had only one student placed, while the Management University of Africa, which declared a capacity of 750, was allocated just 12 students.

In addition to placements through KUCCPS, private universities have the option to admit students directly, offering an alternative pathway for learners seeking higher education.
