On Sunday, June 16, Wiper Leader and Azimio Principal Kalonzo Musyoka called for the Mt Kenya region to spearhead demonstrations against the proposed Finance Bill, which includes measures for increased taxation. Speaking during a church service in his ancestral home in Mwingi, Kitui County, Kalonzo highlighted the significant impact the bill would have on the region if passed by the National Assembly.

Kalonzo noted that the Mt Kenya region, historically less involved in opposition-led demonstrations, would face substantial economic repercussions from the proposed taxes, particularly the motor vehicle tax. “The next time, if there will be demonstrations this time they’ll start in Mt Kenya because they are the ones pressed most,” he stated, emphasizing the economic strain on the region, which has a high number of vehicles.

He further criticized President William Ruto for what he described as punitive taxes targeting the middle class. “The problem we have in this country is the President taxing people but instead of serving the nation, they pocket the cash and live a luxurious life,” remarked the former vice president. Kalonzo accused some of Ruto’s close associates of amassing wealth to the extent of purchasing helicopters in cash.

While acknowledging that his hometown of Mwingi may not be at the forefront of protests, Kalonzo confirmed his participation in demonstrations planned in Nairobi, the nation’s capital. He reiterated the opposition’s role in liberating Kenya from what he termed as the punishing yoke of the Kenya Kwanza regime.

Kalonzo Musyoka, who served as Kenya’s 10th vice president, has already announced his intention to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.
