Authorities in Gem, Siaya County, are investigating a suspected arson incident in Murumba village that resulted in the loss of seven cows and nine sheep on Sunday night. Residents believe that arsonists deliberately set the family’s cattle pen ablaze, leaving the livestock burned beyond recognition.
The home’s caretaker recounted to the media that he was awakened by neighbors around 4 a.m. and informed that the cattle pen was on fire. Despite rushing to the scene, he found the structure already engulfed in flames, with all the animals trapped inside.
With the help of locals, the caretaker attempted to extinguish the fire but was only able to save one sheep. The family suspects that the fire was started by a neighbor who had ongoing disputes with the caretaker and is calling for an investigation into the neighbor’s possible involvement.
Area Assistant Chief Millicent Otieno condemned the incident and confirmed that investigations are underway. “The suspects shall be brought to book,” she assured, directing the family to bury the remains of the animals.
