Residents from Nyeri Town, Nyeri County, took matters into their own hands on Monday by storming and looting Chieni supermarket, purportedly owned by local MP Njoroge Wainaina. Reports indicate the unrest was fueled by the MP’s support for the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which many residents believe will escalate living costs for Kenyans.

During the incident, locals ransacked the supermarket, making off with essential household items such as maize and wheat flour, cooking oil, and sugar. Vandalism ensued as protesters damaged property, including windows, internal signage, and furniture, before escalating the situation by setting fire to the premises.

Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene, deploying tear gas to disperse the crowd and reportedly resorting to live ammunition, although casualties remain unconfirmed. Firefighters, aided by police, managed to extinguish the blaze, preventing further destruction.

As tensions continue to simmer, the MP has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident, while police maintain a presence in Nyeri Town to restore calm amid ongoing protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
