Molo Member of Parliament, Kuria Kimani, suffered significant losses in a raid at his rural home on Tuesday, 25 June, following his support for the controversial Finance Bill 2024. The raid, attributed to locals protesting the Bill, resulted in extensive damage to property and significant financial losses.

An assessment revealed that three vehicles were impacted during the raid. A hatchback and a Land Cruiser were completely burned, while a double cabin pickup sustained damage from stones.

In addition to the vehicular damage, Kimani lost 10,000 chickens reared on his compound. During the demonstrations, some chickens were stolen, and 200 were burned. Furthermore, six grade cows and 29 goats were reported stolen. Police investigations led to the recovery of four cows, although one had been slaughtered. Efforts to trace and recover the stolen goats are ongoing.

The MP’s main residence in Molo was also targeted, with windows of the two-storey house being smashed, necessitating significant repairs.

This violent reaction comes in the wake of nationwide protests against the Finance Bill 2024, a controversial piece of legislation spearheaded by Kimani in his role as chairperson of the Finance Committee. President William Ruto, after a meeting with MPs, announced the decision to withdraw the Bill in response to the public outcry.

“Having reflected keenly on the conversation surrounding the Bill and listening to the people of Kenya who have said they want nothing to do with it, I concede and therefore I will not sign the Bill. It will be subsequently withdrawn and that becomes our position,” President Ruto stated.

Kuria Kimani was last seen attending a committee hearing on the Finance Bill 2024 on June 4, 2024. The incident marks a significant point of tension between the government and citizens over financial legislation and public policy.
