Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale reassured Kenyans of their safety on Thursday, 28 June, following the High Court ruling that upheld the deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) across various parts of the country. The deployment aims to manage ongoing protests and maintain public order.
CS Duale emphasized that the KDF will adhere strictly to the constitution and legal frameworks while executing their duties. He clarified that the military’s primary role is to preserve peace, ensure public safety, and protect critical infrastructure of the government.
“Officers deployed are specifically intended to preserve peace and public safety,” Duale stated. “The government, through the Ministry of Defense, will comply with the court decision and issue a new gazette notice in due course.”
A collage of KDF military vehicles along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi on June 27, 2024, captured the military’s readiness to fulfill their mandate .
CS Duale’s remarks came shortly after High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi upheld the government’s decision to deploy the military to support police in managing the protests. The judge ordered the government to clearly define and gazette the terms and duration of the military’s engagement within two days.
