A tragic road accident involving three matatus claimed the lives of five people on Thursday evening in Gilgil, Nakuru County. The incident occurred when a matatu traveling from Naivasha to Gilgil lost control and collided with two oncoming vehicles.

According to a police report, the driver of the matatu that caused the accident was driving in the wrong lane. In the aftermath, a rescue operation was promptly launched, with the Kenya Red Cross dispatching rescuers to the scene.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the accident, stating that about 20 passengers had sustained critical injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. “A road traffic incident involving three matatus has been reported at the Gilgil Weighbridge in Nakuru County. Our response team is en route to the scene,” read part of a statement by the Kenya Red Cross. “20 injured people have been rushed to nearby hospitals, thanks to the efforts of the county government and well-wishers.”

The injured were taken to Naivasha Sub County Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were transported to the Gilgil Sub County Hospital mortuary.

This tragedy comes just three weeks after a similar accident on the Nairobi-Naivasha Highway in Nakuru County, which resulted in ten fatalities. That incident involved a collision between a truck and a 14-seater matatu filled with passengers. Naivasha OCPD Stephen Kirui confirmed the incident, noting that several others were injured and taken to the hospital. Preliminary reports suggested that the casualties were heading to a family function when the accident occurred.
