On Sunday, June 30, Makueni County Governor Mutula Kilonzo announced the withdrawal of the county’s Finance Bill in its entirety. This decision came less than a week after President William Ruto took similar action following nationwide protests.
Addressing the media, Governor Kilonzo cited intelligence reports indicating planned protests in Makueni as the reason for retracting the Bill. The proposed Finance Bill had garnered national attention due to reports that it aimed to impose daily and monthly taxes on hawkers, small business traders, and vendors.
“Regarding the Finance Bill, the proposals made by the finance department were shelved after a cabinet meeting,” Governor Kilonzo explained. “We agreed that, given the harsh economic times in the country, we would maintain last year’s tax rates.”
Governor Kilonzo also announced tax reductions for shop owners in select regions and introduced an option for traders to pay their taxes in installments. He emphasized.
