On Tuesday morning, July 2, police lobbed teargas to disperse a group of protestors who had gathered on Moi Avenue in Nairobi. The protests were in response to President William Ruto’s remarks about recent anti-tax demonstrations and broader grievances over the high cost of living, corruption, unemployment, and substantial wage bills.

A heavy police presence was observed in the city, with anti-riot officers patrolling and securing crucial government buildings. Most businesses in the Central Business District (CBD) remained closed due to fears of looting and destruction.

In Migori and Makueni Counties, demonstrations were gradually escalating, with protestors lighting bonfires on the roads. Youth in Wote town, Makueni County, were seen lighting bonfires as part of the protests.

In Mombasa, a large number of youth took to the streets, chanting songs and occupying the roads as part of the nationwide protests.
