Kevin Wambua, head coach of the Shujaa rugby team, emphasized that their immediate priority is achieving success at the Paris Olympic Games before shifting focus to the HSBC World Sevens Series next season. Speaking after unveiling the squad for the upcoming games, Wambua highlighted the importance of using the Olympics as a platform to prepare for the rigorous world sevens circuit.

“Our primary focus right now is the Olympics, which will also serve as preparation for our return to the world sevens series. We need to perform at our best in every game to achieve our goals,” Wambua stated.

The squad includes experienced players like Andrew Amonde, a double Olympian, and youngsters like Onyala and Humwa, who Wambua believes will provide the necessary leadership and motivation. Teamwork is paramount, with Wambua emphasizing that success will come through collective effort and mutual support.

Captain Tony Omondi, who missed the previous Olympics due to injury, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure a podium finish this time. “With the squad we have now, I’m confident we will be among the medalists,” Omondi affirmed.

Assistant captain Vincent Onyala echoed these sentiments, highlighting the team’s rigorous preparation and determination to treat each match as a final. “If we execute our preparations well, we are poised for a successful tournament,” Onyala added.

Shujaa will face Argentina, Australia, and Samoa in their pool matches at the upcoming Paris Olympics, aiming to make a significant impact on the global stage of rugby sevens.
