The Commonwealth Secretariat in London recently convened a significant meeting aimed at discussing the active involvement of Kenyan youth in the political landscape. Hosted both virtually and physically, the meeting titled “Mwanzo: Charting a Way Forward” was inspired by the participation of Kenyan youth in movements such as the reject the finance bill initiative.
Moderated by Cylcia Manwa, a Kenyan based in London, the event highlighted the Commonwealth’s commitment to engaging Generation Z in political initiatives. Dr. Luis Franceschi, Assistant Secretary General of the Commonwealth, emphasized the urgency of addressing unrest in Kenya and fostering constructive dialogue among young Kenyans.
“I had the amazing opportunity to host and moderate my first event in international affairs regarding #rejectfinancebill2024 in Kenya and the role of Gen Z,” shared Cylcia Manwa, reflecting on the event’s significance.
Dr. Franceschi underscored the importance of open dialogue, particularly amidst the ongoing challenges in Kenya. “We’re putting together an open virtual forum to facilitate meaningful & constructive dialogue between young Kenyans in and from Kenya to find a peaceful and just way forward on #Rejectthefinancebill2024,” he affirmed.
Wambui Mabelle, a policy and development scholar involved in facilitating the meeting, echoed the sentiment of constructive engagement. The meeting provided valuable insights into current issues and identified collaborative avenues for positive change within Kenyan society.
The international community’s concern over recent unrest in Kenya was palpable, with global Kenyan communities also participating through protest marches worldwide. This meeting stands as a pivotal step in fostering international support and dialogue towards addressing Kenya’s socio-political challenges.
