The revelation came from Amnesty International Kenya Executive Director, Irungu Houghton, during a talk show with the media house. Houghton disclosed that Omondi, who was last seen during the Occupy Parliament protests on June 25, was found dead on an unspecified date. His family had been actively searching for him and had suspected abduction.
“Denzel’s family confirmed his death to us after extensive efforts to locate him,” Houghton stated. “They suspect he was abducted under mysterious circumstances on June 26.”
Omondi, a Quantity Survey student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), was one of the many protestors demanding action against the controversial Finance Bill. His death adds to a growing list of casualties from the protests, with Amnesty International reporting 41 deaths linked to the demonstrations. The Kenyan government, however, maintains that the death toll stands at 25.
The tragic news has sparked renewed calls for accountability and justice for those who have lost their lives during the protests. Amnesty International continues to advocate for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Omondi’s death and the broader context of protest-related violence in Kenya.
Omondi’s family, along with Amnesty International and other human rights organizations, are urging the government to ensure the safety of protestors and uphold their rights to peaceful assembly and expression.
