The Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), Davji Bhimji Atellah, announced on Monday, July 8, that the Union’s social media account on platform X had been hacked by unknown individuals. This announcement came shortly after a controversial post on the account claimed that the planned protests at the Ministry of Health Headquarters had been suspended.

The contentious post, which was swiftly deleted, sparked backlash from Kenyans. In response, Atellah clarified the situation, stating, “Reports circulating to the effect that #OccupyMoH has been suspended are false. The union handle has been compromised and we are trying our best to gain control of it and clean it.”

Atellah reassured healthcare workers that the Union remained committed to the planned strike. He emphasized the need for a system overhaul, including addressing the breach of their social media account. However, he did not explain how the organization managed to delete the tweet if the account was indeed compromised.

The lack of a follow-up clarification on the KMPDU account after the deletion has raised concerns among members and the public about potential internal conflicts within the Union regarding the protests scheduled to take place at Afya House in Nairobi.
