Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, has shared significant achievements and future plans for the Ministry of Roads and Transport, showcasing advancements across air, rail, and seaport transport sectors.
Air Transport:
- Rehabilitated runways and aerodromes in Migori, Kitale, Kabunde, Kakamega, Diani, Voi Ikanga, and Garissa.
- Improved air connectivity for security, strategic, humanitarian, and commercial operations.
- Plans are underway for the construction of a new modern terminal at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Railway:
- Near-completion of the Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus to Miritini Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) Link.
- Construction of 10 new railway stations and acquisition of new SGR coaches.
- Doubling of revenue from both cargo and passenger services.
Seaport:
- Increased volumes of cargo cleared with highly efficient clearance processes.
- Recognition as one of the top three best ports in Africa.
- Development of the Dongo Kundu Berth.
Current Plans:
- Extending the SGR from Naivasha to Malaba.
- Dualling roads from Mombasa to Malaba.
- Implementing Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) in Nairobi.
- Introducing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems and telematics on Kenyan roads to reduce accidents.
Murkomen emphasized that these advancements are geared towards enhancing transport infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and ensuring safety and efficiency in Kenya’s transportation networks.
