In an effort to implement austerity measures, senior government officials, including Cabinet Secretaries, will soon be required to obtain online approval for foreign travel. This initiative is part of President William Ruto’s administration’s strategy to monitor and manage the travel of government personnel more effectively.

During a meeting of the National Development Implementation Committee (NDIC), Head of Public Service Felix Koskei announced that the new online platform would be launched in August. “My office, in collaboration with ICT, has developed an integrated information system. From August 1, we shall go paperless,” Koskei stated. “When you want to travel abroad, you will just log in, upload your application, and the process will proceed electronically until it reaches the President, eliminating the need for excessive paperwork.”

This system aims to reduce the bureaucratic correspondence between various government offices and streamline the approval process. Additionally, Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of state corporations will also be required to seek travel approval through this online platform.

The introduction of this system comes in response to concerns about the substantial funds spent on the foreign travel of government officials. By digitizing the approval process, the administration hopes to curb unnecessary expenditure and enhance transparency in government operations.
