The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced the commencement of preparations for the Grade 9 assessments, marking a significant shift in Kenya’s education evaluation system. Scheduled for students completing Junior Secondary School (JSS), the national assessment will be known as the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

In a move towards inclusivity, students with severe disabilities will undergo a separate examination termed the Kenya Prevocational Learning Education Assessment (KPLEA).

According to KNEC CEO David Njengere, the upcoming assessments, set for next year, will play a crucial role in determining a portion of the final scores for JSS completers. “The school-based assessment will contribute 40% to the total score, while the summative assessments (KJSEA and KPLEA) will account for 60%,” stated Njengere during the announcement.

This change reflects a strategic shift away from high-stakes exams traditionally held at the end of academic cycles, aiming to provide a more balanced evaluation approach throughout students’ education journeys.
