The Kenyan Senate has urged the government to waive hospital bills for those injured and cover funeral expenses for those who lost their lives during the recent anti-government demonstrations that have gripped the nation.
In an order paper released on Tuesday, the Senate acknowledged the grievances voiced by the youth and other citizens regarding corruption, impunity, and incompetence within state and public appointments. The order paper also highlighted other concerns raised by the protesters, such as the extravagant lifestyles of public officials, unemployment, and the high cost of living.
“The issues raised by the youth-led movement have plagued our country’s economy,” noted the Senators.
The Senate expressed deep concern over the loss of lives, injuries, and property damage resulting from the protests. They called on all government ministries, departments, agencies, and constitutional commissions, including Parliament, to implement austerity measures in their operations.
Addressing the challenge of corruption, the Senate urged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and other governance, justice, law, and order sector agencies to intensify their anti-corruption efforts. “We call upon the EACC and other government multi-sector agencies to upscale and make concerted efforts to fight corruption,” the order paper stated.
The Senate also demanded that the National Police Service (NPS) cease abductions, unlawful arrests, and extrajudicial killings and exercise restraint when dealing with peaceful and unarmed demonstrators. They called for the release of all individuals arrested for planning and participating in peaceful demonstrations related to the Finance Bill’s enactment.
Furthermore, the Senate urged the Judiciary to expedite all cases arising from the protests to ensure timely justice.
