Dormitories in two Kirinyaga County schools were burned down on Tuesday night in a wave of unrest affecting local learning institutions. Separate fires broke out at Kiamatugu Boys High School and St Mary’s Kagio Boys High School, with authorities suspecting rogue students were responsible.
Media reports indicated that three dormitories were destroyed. Kiamatugu Boys lost two dormitories and valuable property, while Kagio Boys saw one dormitory burned. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in either incident.
This week’s unrest included four reported cases in the county. On Saturday, a suspected arson attack at Kerugoya Boys caused a dormitory fire at 8 pm. The fire department quickly contained the blaze, and no injuries were reported, but the school was closed indefinitely. Another fire at Kagia Boys also resulted in the loss of a dormitory.
In response to these events, school principals in Kirinyaga County convened a meeting on Tuesday to address the ongoing unrest.
