Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has launched a vehement critique against Raila Odinga, a principal in the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, accusing him of betraying his opposition principles by aligning with President William Ruto’s government. In a video that has surfaced online, Omtatah labeled Odinga’s recent political shift as “political prostitution.”
“This kind of greed and political prostitution are unacceptable,” Omtatah said, condemning Odinga’s decision to merge his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) with Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza camp. Omtatah continued, “Unfortunately, Baba has turned out to be a political prostitute, unable to resist any offer. This makes the government illegitimate.”
The Senator’s remarks come following a Daily Nation report indicating that Odinga has emerged as one of President Ruto’s closest allies amid ongoing political turmoil. Once a staunch critic of Ruto’s administration, Odinga now faces growing calls to denounce the government he previously condemned as ‘illegitimate.’
Odinga’s alliance with Ruto has strengthened amid mass protests, with both leaders exploring the formation of a “broad-based government,” a term often interpreted as a government of national unity. Sources reveal that Odinga and Ruto have been holding regular meetings to discuss strategies for stabilizing the nation.
Despite the emerging alliance, Odinga defended Ruto at an ODM Parliamentary Group Meeting on July 17, rejecting calls for Ruto’s resignation. “Ruto goes, then what? Gachagua could take over and continue bad policies or the military might intervene, leading to chaos,” Odinga argued. “We are not saving Ruto; we are saving Kenya.”
Odinga’s close allies deny any secret meetings with President Ruto at State House, Nairobi, amid concerns about the potential political repercussions. Speaking in Kakamega, Odinga defended himself against accusations of clandestine discussions with the President.
