Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has called on young Kenyans (Gen Z) participating in the ongoing protests to advocate for the drafting of a new finance bill. During a media interview on Monday, Wamuchomba highlighted the need to secure funding for crucial institutions like the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Wamuchomba explained that establishing a proper structure for funding the IEBC is essential, especially in scenarios where MPs are recalled or if the president resigns, as many Kenyans have been demanding. “If Gen Zs want to change, they should ensure that Parliament has ways and a timeline to raise funds for the IEBC and vet the IEBC selection panel as a priority. They should also ensure that the withdrawn finance bill is amended to fund the IEBC,” she stated.

She emphasized that a well-funded and reconstituted IEBC would allow constituents to recall MPs and elect new ones through proper channels, preventing leadership vacuums. “Following the right procedures to recall and elect new leaders would save Kenyans from descending into anarchy and chaos as seen in other nations,” Wamuchomba reiterated.

On June 26, President William Ruto withdrew the controversial Finance Bill 2024 following nationwide protests led by the youth, who demanded its complete withdrawal rather than amendment. Wamuchomba supported the ongoing protests, asserting their importance for Kenya’s progress.

During the interview, Wamuchomba also urged the government to publish the names of individuals who have gone missing during the protests, noting that this would aid in the search for these individuals.
