Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has firmly denied that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has entered into a coalition agreement with President William Ruto. This statement comes after Ruto nominated four ODM members to his Cabinet.
In his statement, Odinga acknowledged the nominations but clarified that they were not part of any formal agreement between Ruto, ODM, or the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party. “I have taken note of President William Ruto’s announcement yesterday regarding the reconstitution of the cabinet to include four members from ODM,” Odinga stated.
The nominated members include Hassan Joho for the Mining portfolio, Wycliffe Oparanya for Cooperatives, John Mbadi for Treasury, and Opiyo Wandayi for Energy. Odinga expressed his best wishes to the nominees, praising their competence and potential contributions to the country’s growth.
Odinga reiterated that neither ODM nor the Azimio la Umoja coalition had any formal arrangement with President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). “As articulated in our statement on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, neither the ODM Party nor Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has entered into any coalition agreement with President Ruto’s UDA party,” he affirmed.
While Odinga did not disclose whether he was consulted before the nominations were made, he emphasized the need for the government to expedite the proposed national dialogue. This dialogue, according to Odinga, is essential for addressing issues raised by Kenyans during recent protests, including the release of arrested protesters and accountability for police actions.
Odinga’s statement was made during a public event in Wajir County on March 1, 2024, where he was accompanied by former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the focus remains on the nominees’ contributions to national development and the ongoing demands for government accountability and dialogue.
