The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has reported substantial progress in its investigation into the shooting of Mediamax journalist Catherine Wanjeri. According to IPOA Assistant Director Josphat Kaimenyi, the investigation is 80% complete, with efforts underway to finalize the remaining aspects swiftly.
“I want to assure Kenyans and members of the press that we are on top of issues regarding the investigation of the harm that Wanjeri underwent,” Kaimenyi stated. “As IPOA, we send our pole to her and wish her a quick recovery.”
Speaking outside IPOA offices in Nakuru, Kaimenyi emphasized that the investigation is in its final stages, with only a few documents from the police needed to conclude the process. “We are finalizing the investigations. We have received the P3 form and are following up with other government institutions, like the police, to fast-track the provision of required documents to complete our investigations,” he explained.
Catherine Wanjeri, the journalist who was shot, expressed her trust in IPOA’s efforts. “I am hopeful that with the speed they have gathered the information, they will deliver the justice required for me and other journalists,” she said.
The shooting incident, which occurred during a public demonstration in Nakuru, has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for accountability from various media houses and human rights organizations. Wanjeri was covering the protest on July 16 when she was shot, resulting in her hospitalization and subsequent demands for justice.
The Kenya Union of Journalists has strongly condemned the incident and is demanding accountability for the actions taken against Wanjeri.
