Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has been removed from his position as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General following a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

The dismissal led to the appointment of Hassan Omar Hassan, the party’s Vice Chairperson, as the Acting Secretary General. “The appointment of Hon Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked. These changes are effective immediately,” stated UDA in a press release.

The decision to dismiss Malala was made after extensive consultations regarding the party’s future direction amidst recent events. UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, addressing the media after the NEC meeting on July 31, 2024, emphasized the party’s commitment to further adjustments in governance and administrative measures to advance its agenda and foster a participative and consultative organization.

The NEC also instructed the National Elections Board to proceed with the grassroots elections as previously scheduled, providing UDA members the opportunity to elect their leaders from the polling center to the national level. “Over time, we must continually realign our policies and political guidance with the broader national political landscape and our collective aspirations,” the party stated.

Malala’s ouster comes two days after a faction of UDA leaders convened an emergency meeting to address recent divisions within the party. During this meeting, the NEC, led by Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, condemned the recent attack on self-proclaimed party Secretary General Joe Khalende. Embu Governor Mbarire disclosed that they resolved to convene a meeting on Friday, August 2, to discuss these incidents, which she described as unfortunate.
