Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has confirmed circulating rumours of his potential impeachment, attributing the speculation to ongoing undermining by a close aide of President William Ruto, whose identity he did not disclose.
In a three-hour interview with the media at his official Karen residence on Sunday night, Gachagua revealed reports indicating that 21 Members of Parliament (MPs) convened at the residence of a Cabinet Secretary from the Mt Kenya region. During this meeting, the Cabinet Secretary allegedly conveyed the President’s frustration with Gachagua.
“I hear the Minister disclosed to the MPs what I said during a past Cabinet meeting, which is wrong since members of the Cabinet have taken a vow not to discuss details of Cabinet conversations,” Gachagua stated.
The Deputy President also mentioned being privy to unconfirmed reports suggesting that his critics within the Kenya Kwanza administration sought his removal but lacked the necessary parliamentary support to impeach him. Gachagua noted that the opposition leader Raila Odinga’s potential entry into the government might provide his detractors with the numbers needed to proceed with the impeachment.
