Tensions erupted at Gusii Stadium on Tuesday as a secondary school football match between Musingu High and Kodero Bara descended into violence, overshadowing the ongoing Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national games.
What began as an exciting match quickly spiraled into chaos when, with Musingu High leading 1-0, confrontations broke out. As the final whistle neared, angry Kodero Bara fans started throwing stones onto the pitch, leading to a significant disruption.
The situation deteriorated into a melee involving supporters, security forces, and county enforcement teams, resulting in clashes that lasted nearly an hour and left several individuals injured. Medics from St. John’s Ambulance were on-site to provide first aid, but the disturbance had already caused considerable damage.
Despite the interruption, the match briefly resumed, allowing Musingu High to maintain their lead and secure a place in the knockout stages. Kodero Bara, who had entered the match with only two points from previous games, saw their hopes of victory dashed.
Kodero Bara’s journey in the tournament had been challenging, with a 2-2 draw against Kirangari High School and a narrow defeat to Machakos High School. In contrast, Musingu High had demonstrated strong performances, earning their semi-final berth.
