As the 2024 Africa Junior Volleyball Championship draws near, Kenya’s U-18 boys and U-20 girls volleyball teams are intensifying their training at the Nyayo National Stadium Indoor Arena in preparation for the qualifiers, scheduled for August 22-31, 2024, in Tunisia.
Under the watchful eyes of their coaches, both teams are rigorously honing their skills to ensure they are in top form to compete against Africa’s finest. Their training regimens have been demanding, focusing on enhancing technical abilities, tactical understanding, and physical conditioning.
The girls’ team, led by Kwanthanze Girls Volleyball Coach Justin Kigwari, with assistance from Catherine Mabwi and David Muthui, has emphasized agility, spiking accuracy, and team coordination. ‘We have talented girls, and we’re working on correcting minor mistakes to build a strong team,’ said Assistant Coach Mabwi.
Meanwhile, the boys’ team, coached by Sila Makiso and assisted by Geoffrey Omondi and Gideon Njine, has concentrated on improving blocking and serving techniques—critical areas highlighted during recent practice matches. ‘In the few days we’ve been together, the boys have shown great progress. We hope to finalize a strong squad by midweek,’ remarked Coach Makiso.
Despite facing challenges such as limited resources and high expectations, the teams remain committed to advancing beyond the preliminary rounds, according to KVF Deputy General Secretary CPA John Ogara. ‘This is a significant moment for us as a federation, marking our return to age-group competitions after a six-year hiatus,’ Ogara noted.
