President William Ruto addressed the absence of Somalia’s President Hassan Mohamud from the launch event for Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson. Speaking at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto explained that President Mohamud could not attend the event due to unavoidable circumstances.

Ruto disclosed that the Somali president had personally informed him via a phone call that he would be unable to attend the launch. Despite his absence, Mohamud conveyed his apologies and reaffirmed his support for Odinga’s candidacy for the top African Union role.

The event, which was presided over by President Ruto, saw the attendance of three other Heads of State from the East African region, including Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu, and South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir. Also present were Burundi’s Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca, former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In his address, President Ruto emphasized the need for Africa to radically reform its institutions to better promote growth and development across the continent. He expressed confidence in Odinga, describing the former Kenyan Prime Minister as the ideal candidate with the necessary credentials to lead the African Union.
