The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has reported significant obstacles in investigating abduction cases that allegedly involve police officers. Speaking before the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security, IPOA CEO Elema Halake outlined difficulties such as officers concealing their identities, using unmarked vehicles, and tampering with vehicle number plates during operations.
These tactics, Halake emphasized, hinder efforts to establish clear connections between officers and the reported crimes. Currently, IPOA is looking into two cases involving fatalities and four instances of serious injuries suspected to be linked to police actions.
Meanwhile, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) presented a report to the committee revealing that 60 fatalities have been documented since the Gen Z protests began on June 18, 2024. The report stated that most victims died from gunshot wounds inflicted by live bullets, while others sustained blunt trauma injuries.
