In a significant shift within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has officially been appointed as the party’s Deputy Leader, marking the end of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s tenure in the role. This decision, announced by UDA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday, November 11, follows Kindiki’s recent swearing-in as Kenya’s Deputy President earlier in November.
In a statement from the NEC, the party clarified that Gachagua could no longer serve in the position due to constitutional constraints, citing Articles 75(3) and 45(7) of the Kenyan Constitution. “By virtue of the resolution of the National Assembly and the vote of the Senate… Rigathi Gachagua is unable to perform the duties of the deputy party leader and thus ceases to hold office of the Deputy Party Leader,” read the NEC’s statement.
The NEC added that Kindiki’s designation as UDA’s Deputy Leader was effective immediately. However, a party source revealed that Gachagua has not been expelled from the UDA and retains the option to continue as an ordinary member or leave the party at his discretion.
