Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has raised concerns over the perceived overlap of powers within the Kenya Kwanza administration, calling it a threat to parliamentary authority.
Speaking during a mediation meeting between Senators and Members of Parliament from the Budget Allocation Committee, Sifuna expressed frustration after learning that decisions discussed in the committee might ultimately be overruled by State House or the Treasury.
“But Chair, for you to tell us that it doesn’t matter what we say or do in this committee, that it will be determined at State House or at the Treasury, it doesn’t make sense. The people of Nairobi sent me to do work in this building. You should make it clear because I can just walk out,” the visibly agitated senator remarked.
Sifuna further argued that if such practices persist, Parliament would lose its relevance and should be dissolved, leaving decision-making entirely to the President.
