National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has criticized Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Amin Mohammed over the growing number of abductions in the country.

Speaking in Khuisero, Kakamega County, on Friday, Wetang’ula condemned the National Police Service (NPS) for denying involvement in the ongoing abductions, terming the situation “unacceptable” and a return to the dark days of enforced disappearances.

His remarks come a day after two men, allegedly abducted by police in December, were found dead at City Mortuary. Justus Mutumwa and Martin Mwau were among four men reported missing from Mlolongo.

Breaking ranks with many of President William Ruto’s allies, Wetang’ula took issue with top police bosses, who told a Nairobi court on Thursday that they had no knowledge of the missing men. “This denial by the police is not only worrying but also retrogressive,” he stated.

The Speaker’s intervention adds to growing pressure on authorities to address the wave of enforced disappearances, as concerns mount over police accountability and human rights violations.
