President William Ruto has hit back at critics questioning his substantial church donations, despite his previous commitment to austerity measures.
Speaking during a Sunday service at AIC Fellowship Annex in Eldoret, Ruto dismissed concerns over his financial contributions to religious institutions, branding his detractors as “people who don’t believe in God.” He reiterated his commitment to supporting churches, doubling the congregation’s previous fundraiser contributions and instructing the bishop to “multiply it by two and send me the invoice.”
The controversy stems from Ruto’s recent Ksh.20 million pledge, along with an additional Ksh.100 million promised for an upcoming construction fundraiser at the Jesus Winner Ministry church in Nairobi. The hefty donations have sparked public outcry, with many questioning the source of the funds given the government’s push for austerity.
Even as Ruto defended his generosity in Eldoret, police in Nairobi were engaged in dispersing protesters attempting to block Thika Road near the Jesus Winner Ministry church in Roysambu. Critics have also directed their anger at the church’s leader, Bishop Edward Mwai, for accepting Ruto’s donation, further fueling the debate on the intersection of politics and religious contributions.
