Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa has cited the Russia-Ukraine war as the primary reason for delays in the construction of the Thwake multi-purpose dam, a Ksh.82 billion project located at the confluence of Thwake and Athi rivers on the Kitui-Makueni counties border.
Speaking before the Senate on Wednesday, Mugaa was questioned by Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo about the repeated postponements of the project’s completion. In response, the CS attributed the setbacks to disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict, which escalated in February 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Thwake dam project, which commenced in March 2018, has faced multiple delays despite its critical role in providing water for domestic use, irrigation, and hydroelectric power generation in the region.
Mugaa did not specify how the war had directly impacted the project but assured lawmakers that efforts were being made to resolve the challenges and expedite completion.
