The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator license until the company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles (PSV) Regulations, 2014 and other set conditions.
In an official notice dated Thursday, March 20, NTSA warned the public against boarding Super Metro vehicles and directed traffic police to impound any non-compliant vehicles operating under the popular matatu Sacco.
A comprehensive audit by NTSA revealed that out of Super Metro’s 523 vehicles, at least:
- 15 had expired inspection certificates
- 8 had expired Road Service Licenses (RSL)
- 42 drivers had repeated speed violations
- Several drivers lacked the required qualifications, posing a major safety risk
Before the license is reinstated, Super Metro must:
- Present 294 vehicles for a compliance inspection at the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre
- Retest 42 drivers with speed violations at the Likoni Driver Test Centre
- Submit signed contracts for all drivers and staff
- Provide a six-month record of staff payroll, PAYE, NSSF, and NHIF remittances
The crackdown follows a series of road accidents involving Super Metro vehicles, with a recent fatal incident on March 12, where a tout allegedly pushed a passenger off a moving bus over an unpaid fare.
