Former Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka Mwangi and ex-Water CEC Grace Gitonga have been fined Ksh.1 million or face two years in jail after being found guilty of procurement-related offences.

Delivering the judgment on Thursday, March 21, Nyahururu Chief Magistrate Evans Keagwo ruled that the evidence presented in court proved the loss of public funds due to irregular procurement procedures.

The case dates back to 2018, when the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) charged the duo for awarding an irregular Ksh.50.5 million tender to an Israeli firm, M/s TAHAL Consulting Engineers Ltd, for a master plan of the Ol-Kalou Water and Sanitation project.

While the court found that no funds were directly lost, the contract was awarded without prior planning and in violation of procurement laws.

The sentencing has been suspended until Monday, March 24, when the two must present proof of payment of the fines. If they fail to do so, they will be escorted to jail to serve their sentences.
