The Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), Agnes Wahome, has shed light on the growing trend of university-qualified students choosing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs over traditional degree courses.

Speaking during an interview with the media on Tuesday, April 8, Wahome attributed the shift to lower entry requirements and high market demand for technical skills. She revealed that over 7,000 students who scored C+ and above in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) had already applied for TVET courses by March 2025.

According to Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) data, the most sought-after TVET courses include electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, hospitality and culinary arts, and automotive engineering.

She also addressed concerns over the application system, noting that the KUCCPS portal had been upgraded following widespread complaints last year regarding submission difficulties.
