Residents of Muragara shopping centre in Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga County, are decrying a prolonged absence of police officers since 2018, a situation they say has left them vulnerable amid rising insecurity in the area.

According to locals, officers stationed at the Muragara police post were transferred following the government’s restructuring of the National Police Service, which integrated the Kenya Police and Administration Police into a single command. Since then, the post has remained deserted.

“We have to seek police assistance from Kabonge or Kagumo police stations, which are quite far. This has made response to incidents very slow,” lamented one resident.

The situation has reportedly emboldened criminal elements, with locals citing a surge in thefts and insecurity-related incidents. Community members are now urging the government to re-deploy officers to the Muragara police post to help restore order and improve safety.

A local official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the land for the police post was purchased in 2008 by a former MP, and its construction was funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).

Former Kirinyaga West Sub-county Police Commander Moses Koskei, who has since been transferred to Malindi, confirmed that no officers have been stationed at the post since 2018.
