Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, who is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence over corruption-related charges, has been granted permission by the High Court to amend his petition seeking release on bail.
Waititu, convicted in a Ksh.588 million graft case involving conflict of interest, had initially filed an appeal challenging the ruling. However, his first request for bail was dismissed, with the court assuring a speedy hearing of the appeal.
In a fresh application, Waititu sought to introduce new evidence and additional legal arguments to support his bid for release. The court has now allowed these amendments, effectively giving the former governor a renewed opportunity to argue for bail.
Waititu was sentenced to either serve 12 years in prison or pay a fine of Ksh.52.5 million. In addition to the sentencing, he was barred from contesting any political office for the next seven years.
His wife, Susan Ndung’u, who was charged alongside him, was handed a one-year jail term or a fine of Ksh.500,000. The case remains one of the high-profile anti-corruption prosecutions in Kenya’s recent history.
