Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, on Tuesday called on the Junior Starlets to approach their decisive clash against Cameroon with a deep sense of national duty as they aim to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit in the final round of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking ahead of the team’s departure to Yaoundé on Wednesday morning, PS Mwangi expressed confidence in the squad coached by Mildred Cheche, encouraging the players to fight for Kenya’s place on the global stage. The Junior Starlets are chasing a back-to-back World Cup appearance and will need a strong performance on Friday to secure qualification.
“I urge you to carry the pride of the nation and play with determination. You’ve come this far and you have what it takes to finish strong,” said Mwangi.
Team captain Halima Imbachi, while acknowledging the pressure on the young team, appealed to Kenyans for continued support. “We know expectations are high, and we are sorry for the loss in the first leg. But we are focused and ready to give our all in the return match,” she stated.
The match is set to take place in Yaoundé, with Kenya needing at least a two-goal margin victory to qualify for the global tournament
