The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has announced that only four junior police officers will face criminal charges in connection with the 2017 post-election protests in Kisumu, which led to the death of Baby Pendo and 39 other victims.

Despite 12 officers — including senior commanders — having been initially implicated, the DPP dropped charges against eight of them, citing insufficient evidence. The decision was formally made on Monday, May 5.

Amnesty International Kenya, which attended the court session, confirmed that the plea-taking process for the four remaining officers is ongoing.

The move has sparked renewed concerns from human rights groups and victims’ families, who have long demanded full accountability for the deadly crackdown during the opposition protests following the disputed 2017 general election.
