Data from KEMRI shows that close to 8% of new cancer cases in Kenya are from among Meru County residents. Most of these are cancers of the gastro-intestinal tract. Gastrointestinal cancers affect the digestive tract organs such as the stomach, large and small intestine, pancreas, colon, liver, rectum, anus, and biliary system. It’s not clear what causes stomach cancer, though research has identified many factors that can increase the risk. These include Poor Diet, H Pylori, Smoking and Long-term stomach inflammation.
