As It is with African cultural beliefs, families bury their loved ones in coffins. But for Ndindiruku residents in Tebere ward, Kirinyaga County, some people burried their loved ones in sacks.

According to the villagers, burial expenses have become too high forcing some people to bury their loved ones in sacks.

On Tuesday, Njeru Ndiga who died after he was attacked by a crocodile, was to be burried in a sack were it not for Tebere MCA elect Peter Karinga, who intervened.

“For us in Ndindiruku, it’s normal for those who have not joined burial welfare groups (to be buried in sacks); the other day it took me 10 minutes to bury an elderly man after his family failed to meet burial expenses,” a resident said. Karinga said that dead people should be handled with respect and dignity. In addition, he urged villagers to join burial welfare groups.
